It’s hard to put into just a few words why I love Barbados so much – it’s a unique blend of everything wonderful that makes this island truly unforgettable. No surprise then that Barbados boasts such a high number of return visitors. One trip is simply never enough!

Take me, for example. I first came for a week’s holiday with a girlfriend… and I was hooked. I came back a few weeks later, then again with the family at Christmas. Within a year, I’d bought my own little slice of paradise! The moment I stepped off the plane, I felt it – that special something in the Barbadian air. I just knew this island would change my life.

So, why Barbados?

First, the people. Barbadians (or Bajans) are some of the warmest, most welcoming people I’ve ever met. Their smiles are genuine and infectious. Life here has a rhythm of its own, a peaceful pace that’s worlds away from the hustle and bustle I left behind in the UK.

Then, of course, there’s the weather. As a Brit, I can’t help but talk about it – and Barbados weather is consistently perfect. A balmy 30°C year-round, often with a cooling trade wind breeze, especially during the winter months. It’s no wonder visitors flock here from January to March.

And the beaches… oh, the beaches. They are among the most beautiful I’ve seen anywhere in the world – sugar-white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters. Two of my favourites:

  • Crane Beach in St Philip – named one of the Ten Best Beaches in the World by Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous
  • Brownes Beach on the south coast – overlooking Carlisle Bay, dotted with catamarans and rich in marine life, including protected sea turtles

An aquatic playground

Carlisle Bay is also a diver’s dream, home to several shipwrecks teeming with fish, seahorses, frogfish, and more. Catamarans sail daily, offering lunch, drinks, music, dancing – and a chance to swim with turtles. Whether you snorkel, scuba dive, or just float, the experience is unforgettable.

When the sun sets

Evenings in Barbados are just as exciting. Head to St. Lawrence Gap, the island’s most vibrant strip, full of restaurants, cafes, beach bars and clubs – all walkable and full of life. Or visit Oistins on a Friday night, where the famous fish fry offers grilled fish, domino games, live music, and local craft stalls. It’s lively, full of character and bursting with Bajan culture.

(And yes, I met my husband at Oistins – so it holds a special place in my heart!)

More than a destination – a community

What truly makes Barbados home for me, though, are the friendships and the sense of community. In just a short time, I’ve built lasting bonds with locals and fellow expats alike. We support one another, we laugh together, we share this beautiful life.

Barbados isn’t just a place to visit – it’s a place to belong.
